APOA President's Message on Founding of the Young Surgeon's Forum
Dear Colleagues,
Brothers, Sisters, and the APOA Family,
It is with great honor, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility that I assume the role of Chair of the APOA Young Surgeons Forum (YSF). The APOA YSF represents more than a professional network—it is a collective voice and a shared vision for the future of orthopaedic surgery across one of the most diverse and dynamic regions in the world. Our strength lies in our diversity, spanning countries with different healthcare systems, resources, and educational opportunities. It is precisely this diversity that makes our mission both meaningful and essential. One of our central priorities moving forward will be to advocate for the democratization of orthopaedic education across the APOA region. Access to high-quality education, mentorship, and academic resources should not be limited by geography, institutional privilege, or local infrastructure. As the Young Surgeons Forum, our primary role will be to raise awareness of these disparities, promote the value of equitable access to knowledge, and serve as a bridge connecting young surgeons with existing educational opportunities, digital resources, and mentorship networks. We aim to amplify visibility of available platforms, encourage knowledge sharing across borders, and foster a culture in which education is accessible, collaborative, and inclusive—empowering every young surgeon, regardless of location, to learn, grow, and actively contribute to the advancement of orthopaedics.
Equally important is our commitment to raising awareness and accelerating the adoption of emerging technologies in orthopaedic education and training. Innovations such as virtual simulation, digital surgical planning, artificial intelligence, and patient-specific technologies are transforming how we learn and practice orthopaedics. As young surgeons, we are uniquely positioned not only to adopt these technologies but to lead their integration into everyday clinical practice and education. The YSF will actively promote initiatives that increase exposure to these tools, foster collaboration with innovation leaders, and empower our members to become pioneers in technology-enhanced education.
In the coming term, we will continue to strengthen our existing programs while introducing new initiatives focused on inclusive education, technological advancement, and international collaboration. We aim to expand our digital educational offerings, enhance mentorship networks, and create new opportunities for knowledge exchange across borders. Most importantly, we will ensure that the voices, ideas, and aspirations of young surgeons remain at the center of APOA’s future.
The future of orthopaedics in the Asia-Pacific region will be shaped by those who are willing to collaborate, innovate, and lead with purpose. Together, we will continue building a connected, empowered, and forward-looking community that advances both our profession and the care we provide to our patients.
I look forward to working closely with all of you in this shared journey.
Sincerely,
Bedri Karaismailoglu
Chair, APOA – Young Surgeons Forum
